Gemini lives inside Google’s ecosystem, so its own export goes to Google Docs first. PDF and Word come from there, or from an extension when you need the whole chat at once.
- Export a response to Google Docs
- Download it as PDF or Word
- Export a Canvas document
- Print the full chat to PDF
- Export the full conversation with our extension
Exporting a Gemini response to Google Docs
Use this when one answer should become an editable document in Drive.
- Sign in at gemini.google.com and open the chat.
- Below the response, select Share & export.
- Select Export to Docs.
- Find the new document in Google Drive.
Result: a new Google Doc with that single response, saved in your Drive.
In the Gemini mobile app, tap More below the response, then Export to Docs. Google’s Export responses from Gemini Apps page lists every destination, including Draft in Gmail.
Tip: For a response with a table, the table has its own Export to Sheets button at its bottom right, on the web. Tables with images can’t go to Sheets.
Downloading the Doc as PDF or Word
Use this when you need a file to attach, print or open in Microsoft Word.
- Open the Google Doc you exported from Gemini.
- Select File > Download.
- Choose PDF Document (.pdf) or Microsoft Word (.docx).
Result: the response downloads as a PDF or Word file.
This is the built-in route shown at the start of the next video. It takes a few clicks, and the video points out that some formatting may change along the way. Check tables and equations in the file before you send it.

Exporting a Gemini Canvas document
Use this when you drafted a report or essay in Canvas and want it as a document.
- Open the chat that contains the Canvas content.
- At the top right of the Canvas panel, select Share & export.
- Select Export to Docs to open the text in a new Google Doc, or Copy contents to paste it elsewhere.
Result: the Canvas document becomes a Google Doc, which you can then download as PDF or Word.
Google’s Canvas help page adds two PDF cases. Slides made in Canvas can be exported as a PDF, and a Canvas doc containing LaTeX can be exported as a PDF with a preview.
The next video uses Canvas mode to print a conversation as a PDF. Menu labels in Canvas change often, so at the time of writing, check the Share & export menu for the PDF option.
Printing the full Gemini chat to PDF
Use this when you want the whole conversation in one PDF without installing anything.
- Open the chat at gemini.google.com in a desktop browser.
- Scroll up to the first message so the full chat loads.
- Press Ctrl + P on Windows or Cmd + P on Mac.
- Set Destination to Save as PDF, check the preview and select Save.
Result: a PDF of the chat page, with your prompts and Gemini’s replies.
Note: The page wasn’t designed for printing. Long chats can be clipped and wide tables split. If the preview looks wrong, use the extension below.
Sharing is different from exporting. Share > Share conversation creates a public link to the entire chat, and anyone with the link can read it.
Exporting the full conversation with an extension
Use this when you need the entire conversation, or only Gemini’s replies, as a clean Word, PDF or Google Docs file.
AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs is our Chrome extension, built by the team behind Merge Docs Pro. The main video above demonstrates it. Its Chrome Web Store listing says it can:
- export a single response or the complete conversation;
- export only Gemini’s responses, leaving out your prompts;
- export Gemini Deep Research reports;
- save as Google Docs, Word, PDF or Markdown;
- keep tables, math equations, inline code, code blocks and images.
To use it:
- Install AI Chat to Word, PDF & Google Docs from the Chrome Web Store.
- Refresh your Gemini tab.
- To save one answer, use the extension’s export option for that response.
- To save the whole chat, use the conversation export, choose the format, and decide whether to include your prompts.
Result: one file with the full conversation, formatted as Gemini displayed it. The main video also exports Canvas content this way.
This Short shows the PDF and Markdown exports in under a minute.
If you export several Gemini chats as Google Docs, Merge Docs Pro can merge them into one Google Doc.
Comparing the methods
| Method | Best for | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Export to Docs | One response as an editable Google Doc | Web and mobile apps |
| Docs File > Download | PDF or Word from an exported response | Google Docs on the web |
| Canvas Share & export | Reports and drafts written in Canvas | Web |
| Print to PDF | The full chat without installing anything | Desktop browsers |
| Our extension | Full conversations with tables and math, in any format | Chrome on desktop |
Platform differences
- Web: every built-in option is available, including Export to Sheets for tables.
- Mobile apps: Export to Docs sits under More below a response, or touch and hold the response. Export to Sheets isn’t available there.
- Work or school accounts: export options depend on your Workspace settings. Your admin may also block extensions.
- Extensions: they run in desktop Chrome, not in the Gemini mobile apps.
Troubleshooting Gemini exports
- No Export to Docs option: make sure you’re signed in. On a Workspace account, ask your admin whether exporting is allowed.
- Only one answer exported: that’s expected. Export to Docs works per response, so use print to PDF or the extension for the whole chat.
- Equations look wrong in Word: Gemini’s math often arrives as plain text. See copying math from Gemini to Word.
- Extension buttons missing: refresh the Gemini tab after installing, and check that the extension is turned on.
