Pasting ChatGPT into Word works well until it doesn’t. Fonts, spacing and tables depend on one choice: which paste option Word uses. Here’s how to pick the right one, and when to skip pasting altogether.
- Paste with Keep Source Formatting
- Copy a table from ChatGPT to Word
- Use Paste Special or plain text
- Change Word’s default paste setting
- Export responses to Word in one click
Pasting with Keep Source Formatting
Use this when you want the response to look the way it does in ChatGPT.
- In ChatGPT, select the Copy button under the response.
- In Word, click where the text should go.
- Press Ctrl + V on Windows or Cmd + V on Mac.
- Select the Paste Options button that appears next to the pasted text. On Windows, you can press Ctrl instead.
- Choose Keep Source Formatting.
Result: headings, bold and italic text, bulleted and numbered lists, and tables come across.
The other two options matter too:
- Merge Formatting keeps bold and italic but adopts your document’s font and paragraph style. Pick it when the text should blend in.
- Keep Text Only drops all formatting. Tables turn into plain paragraphs, so avoid it for structured answers.
Microsoft’s paste formatting guide explains each option and its letter shortcut (K, M and T).
Tip: After pasting, check that headings arrived as Word heading styles under Home > Styles. If they didn’t, apply Heading 1 or Heading 2 so the Navigation pane and a table of contents pick them up.
Copying a table from ChatGPT to Word
Use this when the response contains a table you need to keep as a real Word table.
- Copy the whole response with the Copy button.
- Paste into Word and choose Keep Source Formatting.
- Click inside the table. On the Table Layout tab, in the Cell Size group, select AutoFit > AutoFit Window.
- Use Table Design to apply a table style if you want borders and shading.
Result: an editable Word table that fits the page width. Microsoft’s table resizing guide covers the other AutoFit options.
Using Paste Special or plain text
Use this when the normal paste brings in odd fonts, background colours or spacing.
- Copy the response in ChatGPT.
- In Word on Windows, go to Home > Paste (the arrow) > Paste Special. On a Mac, press Cmd + Control + V.
- Pick a format, such as HTML Format to keep structure or Unformatted Text for plain text. The list depends on what’s on the clipboard.
- Select OK.
To paste plain text in one step, press Ctrl + Shift + V on Windows or Cmd + Shift + V on Mac. The text then takes on the style of the paragraph you paste into.
Changing Word’s default paste setting
Use this when you paste from ChatGPT often and always want the same result.
- In Word for Windows, go to File > Options > Advanced.
- Under Cut, copy, and paste, find Pasting from other programs.
- Choose Keep Source Formatting, Merge Formatting or Keep Text Only.
- Select OK.
Result: every paste from a browser uses your chosen option, so you no longer need the Paste Options button.
If the Paste Options button never appears, turn on Show Paste Options button when content is pasted in the same section.
Exporting responses to Word in one click
Use this when you need several responses, the whole conversation, or math that won’t paste cleanly.
ChatGPT to Word or PDF is our Chrome extension, built by the team behind Merge Docs Pro. The main video above shows it after the paste method. Its Chrome Web Store listing says it can:
- export a single response, the complete conversation or selected messages to Word;
- leave out your prompts and keep only ChatGPT’s responses;
- keep tables, math equations, inline code, code blocks and images.
To use it:
- Install ChatGPT to Word or PDF and refresh your ChatGPT tab.
- For one answer, use the Word button under that response.
- For more, use the export option at the top of the chat and choose the full conversation or selected messages.
Result: a .docx file that opens in Word with the formatting intact.

Comparing the methods
| Method | Best for | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Source Formatting | Most single responses | Word for Windows and Mac |
| Table paste + AutoFit | Tables that should stay editable | Word for Windows and Mac |
| Paste Special or plain text | Removing web fonts and colours | Word for Windows and Mac |
| Default paste setting | Frequent pasting with one result | Word for Windows |
| Our extension | Many responses, full chats, math | Chrome on desktop |
Platform differences
- Windows: all options are available, including the default paste setting under File > Options.
- Mac: the Paste Options button and Paste Special (Cmd + Control + V) work the same way. The default paste steps above are for Word for Windows.
- Word for the web: pasting depends partly on your browser. If formatting drops, open the document in the desktop app and paste there.
- Phone or tablet: copy in the ChatGPT app and paste into the Word app. At the time of writing, tables and math often need fixing, so export from a desktop browser when they matter.
Troubleshooting copy and paste
- Pasted text doesn’t match your document’s font: you kept the web styling. Undo and choose Merge Formatting.
- Table became separate lines: it was pasted with Keep Text Only. Undo and paste again with Keep Source Formatting.
- Equations show as
\frac{a}{b}: that’s LaTeX. Our guide to copying math from ChatGPT to Word shows how to turn it into real equations. - Bullets restart or change style: use the list options in Paste Options, such as Continue List or Merge List.
- Pasting into Google Docs instead: Docs keeps most formatting. Press Ctrl + Shift + V (Cmd + Shift + V on Mac) to paste without formatting, and see Google Docs to Word if you need the file in Word later.
