Editing a PDF often means you need to change text, update a form, or correct a document before sending it.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to edit a PDF file in Microsoft Word.

Word converts the PDF into an editable document, which can cause slight formatting changes, especially in complex layouts.

Use this method when you need to quickly update text without specialized PDF software.

Editing a PDF File in Microsoft Word

You can edit a PDF in Word by opening the file and letting Word convert it into an editable document.

This method works best for quick text or formatting changes. For files with complex layouts, review the converted document carefully before sharing.

Note: This feature is not supported in Word for the web. Use the desktop version of Microsoft Word to convert and edit PDFs.

Steps:

Opening and converting the PDF

  1. Open Microsoft Word.

  2. Click FileOpenBrowse.

Word Open screen showing Browse option

  3. Select the PDF file.

  4. Click Open.

  5. After the file opens, a security prompt may appear asking you to confirm editing.

  6. Click OK to enable editing.

Wait a moment while Word finishes loading and adjusting the converted document layout.

  2. Click Save As.

  4. Open the Save as type dropdown.

  5. Choose PDF to save a PDF copy, or choose Word Document (*.docx) to keep it editable. (You can also select another file type from the list if you need a different format.)

  6. Click Save.

Result:

You now have an edited version of the file.

  • Saved as PDF: Ready to share or print
  • Saved as DOCX: Fully editable for future changes

Common issues and fixes:

  • Some layouts may shift after conversion because PDFs use fixed layouts, while Word uses a reflowable format. This commonly affects tables, columns, and text boxes.

Fix: Adjust spacing, alignment, and table cell sizes in Word, then click the View tab and click Print Layout to review the document before saving.

Before you share the edited file, you may need to fix a layout issue or adjust page orientation.

Conclusion

You can edit a PDF file in Word by converting it, making your changes, and saving the file as PDF, Word Document (*.docx), or another format from the Save as type list.

If the converted layout shifted, review the document before sending it.

Save as PDF when you want a share-ready file, or save as DOCX when you need to keep editing later.
