Google Docs used to treat Markdown as something to import or paste. As of October 2026 it can open .md files directly and keep them as Markdown, which suits notes, README files and answers copied from AI tools.

What’s new in Google Docs and Drive
Google announced native Markdown support on Google Workspace Updates on 5 October 2026. It rolls out gradually, over up to 15 days.
| Before | Now |
|---|---|
| A .md file had to be imported and converted into a Google Doc | Docs opens the .md file itself, in Markdown Mode |
| Conversion could change formatting and strip comments | The file stays .md, and you can comment and co-edit it |
| Drive showed .md files as plain text | Drive shows a rendered preview with clickable links and tables |
It’s available to all Google Workspace customers and to personal Google accounts. There is no setting for users or admins to turn on.
Note: If you don’t see Markdown Mode yet, the rollout may not have reached your account. Check again after a few days.
Previewing a Markdown file in Google Drive
Use this when you only need to read a formatted .md file.
- Open Google Drive and find the .md file.
- Right-click the file and choose Open with > Preview.
- At the top of the viewer, switch between Markdown (the raw text) and Preview (the formatted view).
Result: Headings, lists, tables and links render as formatted text, and links are clickable.
Opening a Markdown file in Google Docs
Use this when you want to edit the file but keep it as Markdown.
- Upload the .md or .markdown file to Google Drive, or find one already there.
- Double-click the file to open it in Google Docs.
- Check for the .md tag next to the document title. That means you are in Markdown Mode.
- Edit the text with the normal Docs toolbar. Docs writes the Markdown for you, so you don’t have to type the syntax.
Result: Your changes save to the same .md file in Drive. Per Google’s help article, the file is not converted into a Google Docs file.
Tip: Because the file stays Markdown, it remains usable in tools that read .md files, such as code repositories, static site generators and note-taking apps.
Collaborating on a Markdown file
Use this when several people need to review or edit the same .md file.
- With the file open in Google Docs, click Share and add people, as you would for any Doc.
- Select text and add comments, or edit together in real time.
- Reopen the file later in Google Docs or another tool. Google says your comments and formatting are kept when you reopen it.
This removes an old workaround: converting Markdown into a Google Doc just to get comments, and losing them when converting back. To carry comments from one Doc into another, see how to copy comments in Google Docs.
What changes when you edit Markdown in Docs
Markdown stores structure, not styling, so some Google Docs features can’t be saved in a .md file. According to Google’s help article:
- Smart chips turn into plain text or links.
- HTML (web) formatting turns into plain text.
- Font colours, highlights and text alignment are removed.
If an edit removes something you needed, open File > Version history to restore an earlier version.
Headings, bold and italic text, lists, links and tables are what Markdown handles well, so a document built from those survives cleanly.
Turning Markdown into a regular Google Doc
Use this when you want full Google Docs formatting, such as colours, smart chips or document tabs, rather than a Markdown file.
Google Docs has offered Markdown conversion features since 2024:
- In a regular Google Doc, go to Tools > Preferences and check Enable Markdown.
- Copy the Markdown text, then right-click in the Doc and choose Paste from Markdown.
- To import a whole file as a Google Doc, choose File > Open > Upload and select the .md file.
Result: The content becomes a normal Google Doc with full formatting, and the .md original stays unchanged. Markdown headings become Docs heading styles, so you can add a table of contents straight away.
To go the other way, select content and right-click > Copy as Markdown, or export the whole Doc with File > Download > Markdown (.md).
Comparing the options
| Option | Best for | File stays .md |
|---|---|---|
| Drive Preview | Reading a formatted .md file | Yes |
| Open in Docs (Markdown Mode) | Editing and commenting on Markdown | Yes |
| Paste from Markdown or File > Open > Upload | Turning Markdown into a full Google Doc | No, it creates a Doc |
| Download as Markdown | Getting .md out of an existing Doc | Creates a new .md file |
Working with many Markdown files
Markdown Mode opens one file at a time. To combine several .md files, for example chapters of a book or AI answers saved as Markdown, you have two routes:
- Join them into one .md file with the free online Markdown merger, which runs in your browser.
- Follow the guide to merging Markdown files and converting them to PDF, which covers Pandoc and merging them into one Google Doc with Merge Docs Pro.
If your Markdown comes from an AI tool, the guides to exporting a ChatGPT chat and exporting a Claude chat show how to save whole conversations.
Troubleshooting
- The file opens as plain text or in another app. The rollout may not have reached your account yet, or another app is set as the default for .md files. Right-click the file and choose Open with > Google Docs.
- There’s no .md tag next to the title. The file was converted into a Google Doc, for example through an older import, so it isn’t in Markdown Mode.
- Colours or alignment disappeared. Markdown can’t store them. Use File > Version history to recover them, or turn the content into a regular Google Doc.
- A smart chip became plain text. That’s expected in Markdown files. Re-add it after turning the content into a regular Doc if you need it.
