How to Export a Claude Chat to PDF, Word or Google Docs

Updated 6 min read Video

Quick answer

Claude has no Download button for a whole chat. To export a Claude chat, copy the response into Word or Google Docs, ask Claude to turn it into a doc and use Export (Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs), or use a Chrome extension that saves single responses or the full conversation as PDF, Word or Google Docs.

Claude shows your conversations as a web page, not as files. Getting one into a document means choosing between a quick paste, Claude’s own document export, a data dump of your whole account, or a one-click extension.

Copying a Claude response into Word or Google Docs

Use this when you need one or two responses and can tidy the formatting yourself.

  1. In the chat, select the response text, or use the copy icon under the response if your version shows one.
  2. Press Ctrl + C on Windows or Cmd + C on Mac.
  3. Open your Word document or Google Doc and press Ctrl + V (Cmd + V on Mac).
  4. To save it as a PDF, use File > Save As in Word or File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf) in Google Docs.

Result: The text lands in your document. Headings and lists usually survive, but math, code blocks and wide tables often need fixing.

Your browser’s Print command with Save as PDF also works on the chat page, but the result keeps the page layout, sidebars and all. For more on the Docs side, see exporting Google Docs as PDF.

Turning the chat into a Claude doc and exporting it

Use this when you want a clean, formatted file and you’re happy for Claude to restructure the content.

Claude Docs is Claude’s own document format. It is available on every plan, and each doc has an Export button.

  1. In the same chat, ask Claude for a doc, for example “Turn this conversation into a doc with headings and a summary table”.
  2. Claude drafts the doc in a panel beside the chat. Edit it there or ask for changes.
  3. Click Export and choose Word (.docx), PDF (.pdf), Markdown (.md) or Google Docs.

Result: You get a real document file, or a new Google Doc, with the doc’s formatting. Anthropic lists these formats in Get started with Claude Docs.

Note: This exports what Claude wrote into the doc, not the conversation itself. Claude may summarise or reorder content, so check it against the chat.

Artifacts and files Claude creates, such as a .docx or a PDF, have their own download options. See how to download Claude artifacts as PDF or Word.

Use this when someone only needs to read the chat, not edit it.

  1. Click Share in the upper-right corner of the chat.
  2. Click Share in the pop-up to create the link, then copy it.

The link shows a snapshot of the messages sent before you shared, including artifacts. Attached files aren’t included. Public links are available on Free, Pro and Max plans; Team and Enterprise members can share only inside their organisation, according to Share and unshare chats.

Exporting a Claude chat with our Chrome extension

Use this when you want the whole conversation, or exact responses, as a file with tables, math and code intact.

Claude to PDF, Word and Google Docs is our Chrome extension, built by the team behind Merge Docs Pro. Per its Chrome Web Store listing, it can:

  • export a single response, the complete conversation or selected messages;
  • export only Claude’s responses, leaving out your prompts;
  • keep tables, math equations, code blocks, images and charts;
  • export artifacts to PDF, Word or Google Docs.

The steps are the same for each format:

  1. Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store and reload claude.ai.
  2. Open the chat. To export one answer, use the extension’s export button for that response and pick PDF, Word or Google Docs.
  3. To export more, choose the full conversation, or select only the messages you want.
  4. Turn on the responses-only option if you don’t want your prompts in the file.

Result: A PDF or .docx downloads, or a new Google Doc opens, with the chat’s formatting.

This walkthrough exports an entire conversation and also shows a Markdown option.

Exporting all your Claude data

Use this when you want a backup of every conversation, not a readable document.

  1. On the Claude web app or Claude Desktop, go to Settings > Privacy.
  2. Click Export data.
  3. Wait for the email, then open the download link while signed in.

Result: You download your user data and chat history. The link expires 24 hours after delivery, per Export your Claude data.

As the video shows, the export is JSON data meant for machines. To read a specific chat as a document, export it with one of the methods above.

On Team and Enterprise plans, the Export data button appears only if an owner has turned on member exports.

Troubleshooting

  • No Export data button: On Team or Enterprise, ask an owner to allow member exports. Primary Owners export the whole organisation from Organization settings instead.
  • Export link doesn’t work: It expires after 24 hours and needs you signed in. Request a new export.
  • Equations paste as plain text: Copying loses the math structure. Use an export, or see LaTeX to Google Docs for rebuilding equations.
  • Extension buttons don’t appear: Reload the Claude tab after installing, and check the extension is enabled in Chrome.

Exporting from ChatGPT or Gemini works differently. See export ChatGPT to Word, PDF or Google Docs and export a Gemini chat. For more guides like this, browse the AI chats and documents hub.

If you end up with several exported chats as Google Docs, you can merge multiple Google Docs into one with Merge Docs Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export a Claude chat to PDF?

Not directly from the chat. Ask Claude to put the content in a doc and use Export > PDF, print the page from your browser, or use a Chrome extension that saves the conversation as a PDF.

How do I export my whole Claude chat history?

Go to Settings > Privacy on the Claude web app or Claude Desktop and click Export data. Claude emails you a download link that expires after 24 hours.

Can I export a Claude chat to Markdown?

A Claude doc exports to Markdown (.md) from its Export menu. For a whole conversation, the data export contains raw data, so a browser extension is easier if you want readable Markdown.

Why does my pasted Claude response lose its formatting?

Copying moves rendered text through the clipboard. Headings and lists usually survive, but math equations, wide tables and code blocks often break. Exporting to a file keeps more of the layout.

Can I export a Claude chat on my phone?

You can copy text in the Claude app, and you can open and edit docs there. The full data export can't be run from Claude for iOS or Android, so use the web app or Claude Desktop.
