Changing the Language in Google Gemini on Mobile (Android and iOS)

You can change the language on a phone or tablet from the Gemini app settings.

Separate flows apply for Android and for iPhone or iPad.

Changing the Language Using the Gemini App on Android

Steps:

  1. Open the Gemini app.

  2. Click the profile icon in the top right.

  3. Select Settings.

  4. Select Language.

  5. Tap Main language.

Gemini prompts you to restart the app to apply the change.

The app closes and reopens using the selected language.

You can also add a secondary language for speech recognition from the same Language screen.

Changing the Language Using the Gemini App on iPhone or iPad

Gemini does not currently include a separate language setting on iPhone or iPad. Instead, it follows the device language automatically.

Steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Language & Region.
  4. Select Add Language under Preferred Language and choose a supported language.
  5. If prompted, set the new language as the primary language so the device (and Gemini) use it.

Changing the Language in Google Gemini on the Web

When using Gemini in a browser, you can change the language either permanently through your Google Account or temporarily using prompts in the chat.

  • Google Account language – set your preferred language in your Google Account so Gemini and other Google services use it
  • Prompts in the chat – ask Gemini to respond in another language for the current conversation only

Changing the Language Using Google Account Language (permanent)

  1. Open Gemini in your browser.

  2. Click the profile icon in the top right.

  3. Select Manage your Google Account.

  4. Open Personal info.

  5. Go to Language.

A confirmation dialog appears after you change the language.

Result: The selected language becomes primary for your Google Account and Gemini. You can add or change languages later from the same Language page.

Changing the Language Using Prompts in the Chat (temporary)

In this section, you’ll ask Gemini to respond in another language for the current conversation without changing any account or app settings.

Steps:

Type a prompt in the chat that tells Gemini which language to use. No account or app settings are changed. Examples:

  • Direct: Respond only in Tamil from now on.
  • Translation request: Translate your next response into Tamil.
  • Bilingual response: Give the answer in both English and Tamil.
  • Instruction prompt: Act as a native Tamil speaker and a professional educator. Please explain [topic] entirely in Tamil using clear and helpful language.

Result: Gemini responds in the requested language for that conversation only. The change is temporary and does not modify your account or app settings.
