Long reports often need just one page shared, such as a summary or a signed form. Word can export any page or page range without touching the rest of the document.
- Save the current page as PDF on Windows
- Save a page range as PDF
- Save one page as PDF on a Mac
- Copy the page into a new document (keeps it editable)
Saving the current page as PDF on Windows
Use this when you need exactly one page from a Word document on a Windows PC.
- Find the page. Go to View and check Navigation Pane, open the Pages tab and click the page thumbnail. You can also press Ctrl + G, type the page number and press Enter.
- Click inside the text on that page so the cursor sits there.
- Click File > Save As (or Save a Copy if the file is already saved), or press F12.
- Click Browse, choose a folder and set Save as type to PDF.
- Click Options (in some versions, More Options > Options).
- Under Page range, select Current page and click OK.
- Click Save.
Result: A one-page PDF of the page where your cursor was. The Word document doesn’t change.
Microsoft lists the Page range and other PDF options in Save or convert to PDF or XPS.
Tip: Want just a paragraph or a table, not the whole page? Select it first, then choose Selection under Page range.
Saving a range of pages as PDF
Use this when you need a few consecutive pages, such as one chapter.
- Note the first and last page numbers in the status bar or the Navigation Pane.
- Open File > Save As, choose PDF and click Options.
- Under Page range, choose Page(s) and enter the numbers in From and To.
- Click OK, then Save.
Result: A PDF containing only those pages.
The full guide to converting Word to PDF covers the other options in this dialog, including bookmarks and keeping hyperlinks clickable.
Saving one page as PDF in Word for Mac
Use this when you work in Word for Mac. Its Save As PDF option exports the whole document, so use the print dialog instead.
- Click on the page you want and note its number.
- Choose File > Print, or press Cmd + P.
- Set the page range to that page only.
- Click the PDF pop-up menu at the bottom of the dialog and choose Save as PDF.
- Enter a name, choose a location and click Save.
Result: A PDF of the selected page. Apple describes the PDF menu in Save a document as a PDF on Mac.
Note: A PDF made from the print dialog is a printed copy, so hyperlinks may not stay clickable. If links matter, use the next method and save the new document with File > Save As > PDF.
Copying one page into a new Word document
Use this when you want the page as its own editable file, or the other methods aren’t available, such as in Word for the web.
- Select everything on the page. Click at the start, then hold Shift and click at the end of the page.
- Copy it with Ctrl + C (Mac: Cmd + C).
- Create a new blank document with Ctrl + N (Mac: Cmd + N).
- Paste with Ctrl + V (Mac: Cmd + V).
- Save it as .docx, or save it as PDF when it’s ready.
Result: A separate document with just that page’s content. Check that headers, footers and margins look right, since they belong to the original document’s section settings.
If an empty page appears after pasting, here is how to delete a blank page in Word.
Comparing the methods
| Method | Best for | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Save As > Current page | One page, links kept | Windows |
| Save As > Page(s) From/To | A chapter or a few pages | Windows |
| Print > Save as PDF | One page on a Mac | Mac |
| Copy to a new document | Editable single page, Word for the web | Windows, Mac, web |
Platform differences
- Windows: Save As and Save a Copy both have Options with Current page, Selection and Page(s).
- Mac: use File > Print with a page range, then PDF > Save as PDF.
- Word for the web: Microsoft’s PDF export from the web creates a basic PDF of the document. For page-level control, copy the page into a new document or use Open in Desktop App.
Troubleshooting
- The PDF contains the wrong page. Current page follows the cursor. Click inside the page you want before opening Save As.
- The page numbers don’t match. Documents with a page numbering that starts later show printed numbers that differ from Word’s physical page count. Use the Navigation Pane position instead.
- There is no Options button. Make sure Save as type is set to PDF first; the button only appears for PDF.
- Links aren’t clickable. You probably printed to PDF. Use Save As with PDF on Windows instead.
