To insert a special symbol in Word, go to Insert > Symbol > More Symbols and pick it. Faster: on Windows, type its Unicode code (for example 03C0 for π) and press Alt + X, or press Alt + = and type an equation code such as \pi, then Space.
To insert a square root symbol in Word, press Alt + =, type \sqrt and press Space. For a plain √ in normal text, type 221A and press Alt + X on Windows, or press Option + V on a Mac. You can also pick √ from Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
To write a math equation in Google Docs, click Insert > Symbols > Equation, then pick symbols from the equation toolbar or type shortcuts such as \alpha, \frac or \sqrt followed by a space. Type ^ for a superscript and _ for a subscript. Equations can be inserted and edited only in Google Docs on a computer.
To write a math equation in Word, press Alt + = (or go to Insert > Equation) to open an equation box, then type the formula or build it with the Structures and Symbols on the Equation tab. You can also hand-write it with Ink Equation, type linear shortcuts like a/b, or insert a built-in formula.
To break a long equation in LaTeX, load amsmath and use an environment that accepts a double backslash: multline for one long equation, split inside equation for aligned lines under one number, or align for several aligned equations. A double backslash inside a plain equation environment is ignored, so the formula stays on one line.
The most reliable way to convert LaTeX to Word is Pandoc: run pandoc paper.tex -o paper.docx --citeproc --bibliography=refs.bib. Equations become editable Word equations, images are embedded and citations are formatted. Add --reference-doc=template.docx to apply your Word styles. For a single formula, paste it into Word's equation editor in LaTeX mode.
